More Info

In 1948, Hubert Humphrey forced the Democratic Party to abandon its segregationist past.
Humphrey was Lyndon B. Johnson’s vice president during Vietnam and lost to Richard M. Nixon in the tumultuous 1968 presidential election.
But before Nixon, before Johnson and before two terms in the U.S. Senate, Humphrey was mayor of Minneapolis and at the’48 Democratic convention that year led an insurgency that forced the party to adopt a first-ever civil rights plank.
Based on a forthcoming biography.
